Built around 1900, the architecture of this former wine merchant’s country house is unique for the area. It has been lovingly restored with modern and comfortable facilities but still retains its original period features, such as the beautiful tile floors, large rooms, high ceilings and wood shutters.
Each apartment is named after a New Zealand native bird, reflecting the owner's connection to their former homeland. All the apartments have spacious double bedrooms, en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers, a living/dining area with flat screen TV and free WiFi and a well equipped kitchenette with fridge and freezer compartment, hob/stovetop and microwave oven/grill, toaster, kettle, crockery, cutlery, glasses, pots and pans. They are all very light, airy and spacious, furnished to a high standard and contain everything you need for a comfortable holiday.
A continental breakfast, which includes fresh fruit, orange juice, yoghurt, cereals, bread, butter, homemade jam and marmalade, cake, cheese, ham and chouriço is provided every day in your apartment so you can have breakfast at any time you want, either in your apartment or outside on the front terrace.
A breakfast suitable for vegetarians or vegans can be provided on request.
There are also tea and coffee making facilities in each apartment.
The house is set in 7½ acres/3 hectares of vineyard and pasture, which is there for our guests to enjoy. On a warm summer’s evening have dinner or enjoy a glass of wine on the large terrace at the front of the house or during the day sunbathe and relax on the pond terrace accompanied only by birdsong, the gentle burble of water and the croaking of the frogs. Or if you prefer shade, relax on the “linden tree terrace” or beneath one of the many olive, cork or fruit trees. And when you want to stretch your legs you are welcome to walk around the Quinta.
This apartment is for 2 people and has a large, comfortable double bed (160 x 200 cm) and en-suite bathroom. It is situated at the front of the house and has lovely countryside views.

For your safety, fire blankets and fire extinguishers are installed throughout the house and a first aid box is available.
Quinta da Vila Maria has good access from a tarmac road. Free, off-road parking is available inside the main gate of the Quinta. For those travelling by bicycle or motorbike we have undercover, secure parking available.

For guests wanting to make use of the kitchenette in their apartment, there are 6 supermarkets in Portalegre, a 10 minute drive away. A vegetable, fish, meat and delicatessen market is held every Wednesday and Saturday morning in the Portalegre Municipal Market, a great place to buy fresh produce from local suppliers. The local baker's van stops outside the house four times a week with a selection of Alentejo style breads and cakes.
There are a number of good restaurants within a 5-10 minute drive of the Quinta serving delicious Alentejo food and wines, and many more to choose from in Portalegre.
A local dining guide and directions to restaurants, supermarkets or the municipal market are all available in reception.
